Samsung Propel Pro now on sale in US

There are very few Windows Mobile devices that come with front-facing keyboard and Samsung Propel Pro is one of them. Unlike most Windows Mobile devices, it comes with non-touchscreen edition of Windows Mobile (Windows Mobile Standard). It comes with zippy 528MHz processor and 3MP auto-focus camera that should take decent pictures.

Operations:

  • Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard
  • Wi-Fi Support (802.11 b/g)
  • Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)
  • Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA (850/1900/2100 MHz)/Quad band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
  • 528 MHz processor
  • 256MB ROM/128MB RAM

  • Display: 2.55″, 65K color/TFT Colors, 320 x 320 pixels

Interestingly, the previous Propel was not a Windows Mobile device, but the Propel Pro is. So, it is definitely nice to see Samsung using Windows Mobile instead of some other dumb OS.

Daylight (DST) Saving in Europe today

Daylight saving time (DST; also summer time in British English) is the convention of advancing clocks so that afternoons have more daylight and mornings have less. Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn.

So, if you have not seen the above message on your Windows Mobile device, then you will have to adjust the time manually.

Soon to be launched: Samsung WiMAX MID AKA SWD-M100 AKA Mondi

Samsung is all set to launch SWD-M100 (Mondi) in the US. The design is similar to Nokia N810 which is also a slider MID. I am personally a big fan of slider MIDs as you can hide the keyboard when you do not want to use them. However, there is one thing that sets the M100 aside from the rest of the MIDs available in the market. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1. It will come with Opera Mobile for the web-browsing as the IE in WM 6.1 is only good for mobile websites.  Here are its specifications:

  • 4.3-inch screen
  • WiMAX
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • Micro SD card slot
  • 3.0 megapixel camera
  • 256MB of ROM
  • TV out

It will only be available from Clearwire in the US.

Commentary: The main question that comes to minds of a lot of people: Is it going to be successful with Windows Mobile 6.1 as its OS? Personally, Windows Mobile is not a bad choice at all especially with so many productivity applications under its belt. Perhaps they should go with the WM 6.5 which offers IE mobile 6 and better interface.

Acer F1 coming in September. Are you ready iPhone?

After HTC and Toshiba, Acer F1 is going to be the third windows mobile phone to sport a Snapdragon processor. The F1 will come with Windows Mobile 6.5 and Snapdragon processor. However, for some reason, the Acer will only allow to run at 800MHz and not 1GHz. The most obvious reason right now seems to be battery life. The Acer F1 will also come with ATi graphics card and Acer’s own flash-based today screen shell.

Skype 3 beta released for Windows Mobile

So, what is new in this release?

  • Send files: Free to send spreadsheets, photos, music and other files Skype-to-Skype.
  • Send texts (SMS): Great value texts to mobiles abroad, and a great way to avoid roaming charges abroad if you text on Skype from a WiFi zone.

Video of skype beta in action:

Odd Fact: Few bloggers are lamenting about the lack of Video calls in Skype mobile. I guess they should be aware of the fact that the Skype mobile takes a lot of processing power even though it is just processing our audio. I guess we will have to wait for the video feature for some more time. Perhaps until all the Windows mobile devices have the 1GHz snapdragon processor.
