MSI RTX 2070 Gaming Z review: better than the GTX 1080

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Thanks to not sign an NDA with NVIDIA, the guys have released exclusively HardOCP which is in fact the first review of RTX 2070 worldwide, to be specific the MSI RTX 2070 Gaming Z . This has been possible thanks to the fact that the sample that they have obtained has been facilitated by a retailer and not by an assembler, so they have been ahead of the start date for the publications.

The RTX 2070 will be one step above the GTX 1080 – Although tomorrow said NDA expires, at the hands of Kyle Bennett we have the first official results of one of the most anticipated GPUs of the moment, the RTX 2070.

The sample is in particular an MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming Z, which means that it is one of the best versions of RTX 2070, since not only has PCB and custom heatsink, but its overclocking is very high, specifically and within MSI range, we find the fastest version of this chip ( 1830 MHz ).

We have analyzed this review and there are very interesting data, especially with some new titles and others not so new. For that reason we are going to show some results that have seemed striking to us and thus we will be able to comment them. This RTX 2070 has been compared against an MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X and an Asus ROG Strix RX Vega 64 OC, so we have the perfect battlefield for the user who is thinking of buying one of these cards as they are next in price.

We will choose the resolution 2K or 2560x1440p for being the most representative at the time of acquiring a card like this.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

The configuration of this game goes through DX11 and exclusive screen, they have also enabled SMMA T2X for a high requirement for all cards:

As we can see, the Framerate is higher than 60 FPS in all GPUs, but we found curious data, although the RTX 2070 is 16% faster than the GTX 1080 Ti is less constant in terms of framerate.

Far Cry 5

In Far Cry 5 the results are tremendously even but in contrast to SOTTR the Framerate seems more stable in the RTX 2070.

Mass Effect: Andromeda

In Mass Effect: Andromeda the falls are even more pressing than in its two competitors.

Mass Effect Andromeda

While the RX Vega 64 may be the most constant, the RTX 2070 suffers bulging falls that should be looked at more closely.

Battle field 1

Battelfield 1

Another title to highlight is Battle field 1, where we do not have Frame rate but simply the average of FPS. The difference between the three cards is not very big, especially if we consider that the game has been executed in DX11.

Conclusions

The RTX 2070 should be the best-selling NVIDIA card in the mid-range, even if the price has skyrocketed. Not in vain his predecessor did so and it is expected that with the increase in performance of Turing sales confirm the trend.

Keep in mind that in this comparison both the RTX 2070 and the GTX 1080 had clocks almost stuck, so the data is even more reliable in terms of comparing architectures or improvements.

The differences have been remarkable, being: + 16% in SOTTR, + 13% in KCE, + 17% in Wolfenstein II, + 18% in GW4, + 19% in DEMD and in the others the differences are smaller, such as BF1 or MEA or FC5.

The overall average barely exceeds 13% of performance compared to a GPU that is on the market and with succulent discounts like the GTX 1080, with same bus and same capacity of VRAM.

The RTX 2070 is the clear winner, but also at a higher price, around 130 euros above, then is it worth the RTX 2070? According to HardOCP only if you are going to upgrade from lower range cards, to which we want to add that as long as the price difference is minimal.
