A user has modded his Acer Predator Helios 300 in a way that he is able to disable the throttling of its Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card. After overclocking, the laptop is able to run cool even at 1.05v and 1890MHz. While this is not crazy to do extreme overclocking in a desktop, it is a great feat for a gaming laptop like Acer Helios 300.
The user who did this mod bought an Acer Predator Helios 300 with following configuration – i7-7700hq quad core kabylake processor, GTX 1060 (which now runs at 1892/4370 @ 1.05V), 16gb (2x8gb) DDR4 @2400, 256gb PCIE SSD + 1tb Hitachi Travelstar Hard Drive.
He adds that the cooling is pretty decent on the Acer Helios 300 but he did this GTX 1060 mod to take everything to next level and we bet that he did. He went from changing thermal paste and changed entire cooling system. Nvidia Pascal graphics card are known for something called TDP power throttling. While there is a solution to prevent throttling on a desktop GPU, nobody had thought of doing the mod on a laptop.
The moder had one job – find the resistors on the motherboard that throttle the GPU clock and he did it and applied the mod.
